Wood Gates in South Florida: The Honest Details
Will a wood gate sag?
This is the honest concern with any wood gate, and it comes down to how the gate is framed. Every wood gate we build is constructed on an external aluminum frame — the wood is mounted to a welded aluminum structure rather than relying on the wood alone to hold its shape. That’s what keeps our gates square and functioning for years, because aluminum doesn’t swell, twist, or rack the way an all-wood frame does in South Florida’s humidity. From there we size the hinge post for the load — an upgraded 6×6 post where the gate is heavy — and steer you toward a double or slide gate before a single leaf gets wide enough to strain. What we can’t stop is the ground: South Florida’s sandy soil shifts over time and can move any post, which is why post setting matters as much as the gate itself.
Single, double, or slide — where the line is
We build wood gates as single, double, or slide. The hard rule: we don’t recommend any single leaf wider than about 6 feet — past that, wood gets too heavy to stay working, even on an aluminum frame. So for a wide opening we go to a double gate (two leaves meeting in the center, each under 6 feet) or a slide gate where there isn’t room to swing. On double gates we install drop rods, so one leaf can be locked and the other used independently — and the rods also hold both leaves steady against the wind, which is what tends to rack a double gate over time. We’ll tell you on-site which configuration your opening needs.
How wood gates hold up in South Florida humidity
Wood moves with moisture — it’s the nature of the material, not a defect. Pressure-treated pine is chemically treated to resist the rot, insects, and damp that would destroy untreated wood here, but every wood gate expands and contracts with the seasons and needs periodic sealing or paint to stay sound. A gate that’s sealed and whose hinges are checked once a year will outlast one that’s installed and forgotten. We’re straight about that up front, because a wood gate is a beautiful, classic choice that rewards a little maintenance — and we’d rather set that expectation than have you surprised by it.
What a Wood Gate Costs
A wood gate’s price comes down to four things: the opening width, single versus double, the finish (stain or paint), and whether you add automation. A single pedestrian gate matched into an existing wood fence is the most affordable; a wide double driveway gate with an electric operator is the most involved. We give a firm number after a free on-site measure — post condition, opening width, and access all move the labor — but we’ll give you the range over the phone so you’re never guessing in the dark.
Automating a Wood Gate
Wood swing gates can be automated with an electric swing operator, single or double. The thing to know with wood specifically: an operator is unforgiving of a heavy or sagging gate — it will drive a gate that’s already straining its hinges until something fails early. That’s exactly why we build automated driveway gates on a heavier, more structurally sound external frame (usually painted for appearance, sometimes on an upgraded 6×6 post) over the aluminum gate frame — it’s the most common style of wood gate we automate, because it’s built to carry the motor and the daily cycles. Automation works best designed in from the start rather than bolted onto an aging gate. From there, add keypad, remote, intercom, or app control.

Wood Gate FAQs
What wood species does XL Fencing use for gates in South Florida?
XL Fencing installs wood gates in pressure-treated pine, chemically treated to resist rot, insects, and moisture and well suited to South Florida's humidity and heat. It's a durable, cost-effective choice for residential wood gate installations.
How wide can a wood gate be?
We don’t recommend a single wood leaf wider than about 6 feet — past that, wood gets too heavy to stay working reliably. For wider openings we build a double gate (each leaf under 6 feet) or a slide gate. XL Fencing measures your exact opening during the free estimate and recommends the right configuration.
Will a wood gate sag over time?
Not the way an all-wood gate does. We build every wood gate on an external aluminum frame, so the wood isn’t relied on to hold its shape — that keeps the gate square and working for years. We also size the hinge post for the load (an upgraded 6×6 post where needed) and use double or slide gates for wide openings so no single leaf gets too heavy.
Can a wood gate be automated?
Yes — wood gates can be automated with electric swing operators. Automation is compatible with single and double swing wood gates. XL Fencing will assess your gate dimensions and advise on the appropriate operator system.
How do I maintain a wood gate in South Florida?
Wood gates in South Florida require periodic sealing or painting to protect against moisture, sun, and insects. Annual inspection of hinges, latches, and the finish coat is recommended. XL Fencing can advise on the right maintenance schedule for your wood species and finish.
Does a wood gate installation require a permit?
Gate installations in Broward and Palm Beach County typically require permits. XL Fencing handles all permit filings and final inspections on your behalf — call (954) 482-0531 to get started.
Will a wood gate sag over time?
A properly built one resists sagging for years — we size and concrete the hinge post, build in a diagonal brace or anti-sag cable, and recommend a double gate before a single span gets wide enough to droop. Ground movement in sandy soil can shift any post over time, independent of the gate’s construction.
How much does a wood gate cost?
Price depends on width, single versus double, stain or paint finish, and automation. A single gate matched to an existing fence is most economical; a wide automated double driveway gate is the most involved. We give a firm quote after a free on-site measure and a range over the phone.
Should I get a single or double wood gate?
Up to about 6 feet, a single swing gate works. Wider openings should use a double gate — splitting the span reduces the load on each hinge and helps prevent sagging. We confirm the right configuration during the free measure.
Can you replace a sagging or failing wood gate?
We build and install new gates rather than repairing existing ones. If your wood gate is sagging, dragging, or has failed hardware, we’ll replace it with a new gate built and hung to spec. We don’t take on repair or rehang jobs.
