Universal Rules — All Cities
These requirements apply across virtually every municipality in Broward and Palm Beach County.

Florida Pool Barrier Requirements
Minimum requirements for pool fencing in Broward and Palm Beach County under the Florida Building Code.
48 inches (4 ft) measured on the outside of the barrier. XL Fencing recommends 5–6 ft for added safety margin.
Maximum 2 inch gap between ground and bottom of fence. Stepped installation required on sloped yards near pools.
Vertical members: max 1¾″ clear opening. Chain link mesh: max 2¼″ square opening. Decorative cutouts: max 1¾″.
Must swing outward away from pool. Must be self-closing and self-latching. Latch minimum 54″ above grade or shielded. Magna Latch hardware recommended.
If horizontal members are less than 45″ apart, horizontals must be on the pool side (inside face) to prevent climbing.
Pool barrier is a sub-permit tied to the pool permit. Requires signed “Affidavit of Understanding” from owner and contractor.
