Durable Chain Link Gates for Residential & Commercial Properties
Chain link gates offer the most cost-effective way to secure an opening while maintaining airflow and visibility. XL Fencing installs chain link swing and slide gates for residential driveways, backyard access points, commercial properties, and high-traffic industrial entrances throughout Broward and Palm Beach County.
Available in galvanized or vinyl-coated finishes, and in standard or heavy gauge wire, our chain link gates are built to handle South Florida’s weather and daily use. We also install automated slide gate systems for commercial and residential applications requiring hands-free access.

Which Chain Link Gate Do You Actually Need?
Swing or slide — how to choose
The deciding factor isn’t preference, it’s space. A swing gate needs clear arc room to open; on a tight driveway or against a slope, that arc isn’t there. A slide gate needs side room to retract but no swing clearance, which is why it’s the default for commercial entrances and driveways that open right onto pavement. Rule of thumb: openings up to about 6 feet, single swing; 6 to 12 feet, double swing or slide depending on clearance; wider than 12 feet, slide gate. We confirm it on-site, because post conditions and grade decide as much as the width.
What gauge you need, in plain terms
Gauge is wire thickness, and lower numbers are thicker. 11-gauge is fine for a residential side-yard or backyard access gate. 9-gauge is the heavier wire we recommend for driveways, commercial sites, and any gate that gets daily or vehicle traffic — it resists bending and sagging under repeated use. If a gate gets leaned on, driven near, or opened dozens of times a day, the heavier wire pays for itself.
Will a chain link gate sag?
A chain link gate frame is light, which works in your favor — there’s less weight pulling on the hinge post than a heavy wood or ornamental gate. Sagging on chain link almost always traces to one of two things: an undersized or poorly set hinge post, or a frame that’s too wide for a single swing. We set gate posts in concrete sized to the gate, and recommend a slide or double-swing before a single swing gets wide enough to droop under its own span. Note that ground movement in South Florida’s sandy soil can shift any post over time, independent of installation.
What a Chain Link Gate Costs
A chain link gate’s cost comes down to four things: the opening width, swing versus slide, galvanized versus vinyl-coated wire, and whether you’re adding automation. A standard residential single swing gate is the most affordable opening you can put in a fence line. A wide commercial slide gate with an electric operator sits at the other end. We give a firm number after a free on-site measure rather than a guess online, because post condition and access change the labor — but we’ll tell you the range on the phone so you’re not in the dark.
Automating an Existing Gate or Fence
If you already have a chain link slide gate, you can often add an electric operator without replacing the gate — provided the gate rolls true and the track and posts are sound. We assess the existing setup first; a gate that drags or a post that’s shifted has to be corrected before an operator goes on, or the motor fights the gate and fails early. From there we add keypad, remote, intercom, or app control. If you’re starting from scratch, we build the gate automation-ready so you can add the operator now or later.

Chain Link Gate FAQs
What gauge chain link is used for gates?
XL Fencing uses 11-gauge and 9-gauge galvanized chain link for gates, depending on the application. Heavier gauge (9-gauge) is recommended for commercial or high-traffic gate applications. Vinyl-coated options are available in black or green.
Can a chain link gate be automated?
Yes — chain link slide gates are commonly automated for commercial properties and residential driveways. XL Fencing installs electric slide gate operators with keypad, intercom, and remote control access options.
What is the difference between a swing and a slide chain link gate?
A chain link swing gate opens on hinges like a door. A slide gate rolls horizontally on a track — ideal for wide openings, commercial properties, or driveways without swing clearance. XL Fencing recommends the right type based on your opening and property layout.
How wide can a chain link gate be?
Chain link swing gates are typically up to 6 feet wide. For wider openings, double swing gates or a chain link slide gate are recommended. Chain link slide gates can span openings of 20 feet or more for commercial applications.
Does a chain link gate installation require a permit?
Gate installations in Broward and Palm Beach County typically require permits. XL Fencing handles all filings and inspections on your behalf. Call (954) 482-0531 to get started.
Can you automate my existing chain link gate?
Often, yes — if it’s a slide gate that rolls smoothly on a sound track, we can add an electric operator with keypad, remote, or app access. We assess the gate and track first, since an operator added to a dragging or misaligned gate wears out fast. Call (954) 482-0531 for an on-site look.
How much does a chain link gate cost?
Price depends on width, swing versus slide, galvanized versus vinyl-coated wire, and automation. A residential single swing gate is the most economical; a wide automated commercial slide gate is the most involved. We give a firm quote after a free on-site measure, and a range over the phone.
What’s the difference between galvanized and vinyl-coated chain link?
Galvanized is the standard silver-grey finish — the most cost-effective and durable choice for security and access. Vinyl-coated adds a black or green PVC layer for a more finished look that blends with landscaping and cuts glare. Both hold up to South Florida weather; the choice is appearance and budget.
Do you repair or rehang an existing chain link gate?
Yes — sagging gates, failed hinges or latches, and gates knocked off track are common service calls. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or whether the opening is better served by a different gate type.
